Mindfulness beyond the mat

May 6, 2010

When was the last time that you ate in complete mindfulness? Consumed your meal with gratitude for the nourishment, and with awareness of each individual bite?

A recent news article has correlated yoga with weight loss. But not for the reasons you may think–this article does not espouse on the benefits of heated, vigorous yoga as a way to shed pounds. Nor does it say that any type of yoga is more beneficial for weight loss than others. Rather, yoga as a practice of mindfulness has been shown to lead to weight loss. When you are aware of the entire eating process, you generally eat less–because you know when you are full! And when you are grateful for your food–regardless of what you are consuming, that gratitude leads to better absorption of the nutrients present in your meal.

So next time that you sit down to eat, take a moment to think about where your food came from. Acknowledge its nourishing ability, and enjoy each and every bite. You may be surprised at how enjoyable mindful eating is, and with regular practice, you may find yourself a few pounds lighter!
